A recurring assignment this year has been a series of portraits at the Macau University of Science and Technology hospital for MacauINC magazine. The hospital is marketing itself as something of a destination medical facility for vacationing mainland Chinese patients; in the magazine, the doctors at the facility are introduced to those potential patients through a series of stories about their individual practices.

So this is a video not pictures and the event was a book launch not an exhibition but still, I think I can justify the title: The event did rather resemble an exhibition (with loads of printed photographs lining the walls) and this video is composed primarily of individual still photos sewn together...

On December 6th, David Hartung officially launched his book "Macau: Work in Progress" at the Macau Military Club. I've had the honor and privilege of hanging about Macau while David made many of the images in his book, which has made it all the more exciting to see the work printed in this monograph of sorts.

I'm terrible at socializing at this sort of social occasion so decided to make a time-lapse video of the book launch instead (it was that or drink all the wine). Three cameras, a couple bags of lenses, 20+ CF cards and 270GB of raw data, and here are the results:

David Hartung invited me to visit his printer for the first day printing his photo book "Macau: Work in Progress" last month in Hong Kong. I first came to Asia to work with David at Destination Macau magazine where he photographed most of the material for this book so I knew that the images would be interesting. What I didn't fully anticipate was how visually compelling the factory itself would be - for video.

For photographers new to south China, sourcing professional equipment can be difficult. There are small camera shops sprinkled about most large cities (particularly Macau and Hong Kong) but finding suppliers for items more exotic than consumer DSLRs and lenses can be tricky. Many higher-end photo equipment retailers and wholesalers in the area have minimal web resources rendering them nearly impossible to find except through word-of-mouth recommendation.

To aid photographers in Macau, Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Guangzhou and neighboring cities, I will do my best to list my favorite photography equipment shops on this page; I don't aim to make this a complete, exhaustive listing but rather a mix of invaluable and interesting area merchants. Cafe Deco Macau asked me to stop by and make a few food photos for one of their Chinese food promotions last year. People usually assume I'm joking when I say this, but photographing food is great fun.
